Poker Run For Fallen Heroes

A charity poker run is set to be held on Oct. 8 in Lancaster to honor law enforcement officers and firefighters who have been killed in the line of duty. Proceeds from the event will be for the benefit of their families.

This year's annual Antelope Valley Fallen Heroes Memorial Ride will be sponsored by the Lancaster Sheriff's Boosters and the Palmdale Sheriff's Boosters.

"We want a system in place in the future so we don't have to do these emergency fundraisers when these things happen. This is going to develop into a regular foundation," Sheriff's Sgt. Darrel Brown said.

A previous ride was attended by hundreds of motorcyclists, and the event raised $25,000 for the family of a police officer killed in a crash in March, Deputy Pierre Bain.

The last stop for the ride will be at the Antelope Valley Harley-Davidson dealership where free lunch will be served. A memorial service will be held in honor of Bain, together with Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Daniel Elkins who was killed in a 2004 crash and Deputy Steve Sorensen who perished in a 2003 shootout.

"It's important to remember those who sacrificed their lives protecting the community and support, and assist their families," Lancaster sheriff's station commander Capt. Carl Deeley said.
